Ingredients:

  • 10 slices of day-old bread (white or whole wheat), torn into pieces (approx. 300g)
  • 2 cups whole milk (480ml)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (240ml)
  • 3 large eggs (150g)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (1g)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans) (30g)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup raisins (40g)

Instructions:

  1. Tear the bread into pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour the custard over the bread pieces, ensuring all are soaked. Let sit for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Pour the soaked bread mixture into a greased baking dish. Top with nuts and raisins if using.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  7. Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Can be served warm or at room temperature.
