Ingredients:
- 10 slices of day-old bread (white or whole wheat), torn into pieces (approx. 300g)
- 2 cups whole milk (480ml)
- 1 cup heavy cream (240ml)
- 3 large eggs (150g)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2g)
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (1g)
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: 1/4 cup chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans) (30g)
- Optional: 1/4 cup raisins (40g)
Instructions:
- Tear the bread into pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour the custard over the bread pieces, ensuring all are soaked. Let sit for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Pour the soaked bread mixture into a greased baking dish. Top with nuts and raisins if using.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
- Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Can be served warm or at room temperature.
