Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (680g), 80/20 blend preferred
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced (approx. 1 cup) (200g)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup (120 ml)
  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard (60 ml)
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish (60 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar (30 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (15 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup water (60 ml), or beef broth
  • 6 hamburger buns, preferably sesame seed buns, toasted
  • Shredded iceberg lettuce
  • Diced white onion
  • American cheese slices, optional

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onion is softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and onion. Stir to combine. Add water (or broth) and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Toast the hamburger buns. Spoon a generous amount of the Big Mac Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom bun. Top with shredded lettuce, diced onion, and a slice of American cheese (if using). Place the top bun on and serve immediately.
