Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
- 1.5 pounds ground beef (680g), 80/20 blend preferred
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced (approx. 1 cup) (200g)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup (120 ml)
- 1/4 cup yellow mustard (60 ml)
- 1/4 cup sweet pickle relish (60 ml)
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar (30 ml)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (15 ml)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup water (60 ml), or beef broth
- 6 hamburger buns, preferably sesame seed buns, toasted
- Shredded iceberg lettuce
- Diced white onion
- American cheese slices, optional
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease.
- Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onion is softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Pour the sauce mixture over the beef and onion. Stir to combine. Add water (or broth) and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Toast the hamburger buns. Spoon a generous amount of the Big Mac Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom bun. Top with shredded lettuce, diced onion, and a slice of American cheese (if using). Place the top bun on and serve immediately.
