Ingredients:

  • 6 medium fresh apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and diced (About 750 g)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (25 g)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5 mL)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (2.5 mL)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (1.25 mL)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50 g)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30 mL)
  • 1 box (15.25 oz / 432 g) yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup (2 sticks / 227 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, about 50 g)
  • 1/2 cup prepared caramel sauce (About 120 mL)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine diced apples, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, sugar, and lemon juice (if using). Toss to coat apples evenly.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix over the apple mixture. Distribute it as evenly as possible.
  5. Slowly and evenly drizzle the melted butter over the cake mix. Try to cover as much of the cake mix as you can.
  6. Sprinkle the chopped pecans or walnuts over the buttered cake mix (optional).
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool slightly (about 10 minutes). Drizzle generously with caramel sauce.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!
