Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (approximately 1.35 kg or 3 lbs)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1g)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30ml)
  • 6 slices stale bread (such as white or whole wheat), crusts removed, cubed (approximately 150g)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (113g)
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (50g)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (30g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.5g)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat evenly.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine cubed bread, melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and salt. Toss until the bread is evenly coated with the butter mixture.
  3. Layer half of the apple mixture in the baking dish. Top with half of the crumble topping. Repeat with the remaining apple mixture and crumble topping.
  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. Check for tenderness by inserting a knife into the apple mixture; it should slide in easily.
  5. Let the Apple Brown Betty cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to thicken slightly.
