Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (approximately 1.35 kg or 3 lbs)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5g)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1g)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30ml)
- 6 slices stale bread (such as white or whole wheat), crusts removed, cubed (approximately 150g)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (113g)
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (50g)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (30g)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.5g)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat evenly.
- In a separate bowl, combine cubed bread, melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and salt. Toss until the bread is evenly coated with the butter mixture.
- Layer half of the apple mixture in the baking dish. Top with half of the crumble topping. Repeat with the remaining apple mixture and crumble topping.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. Check for tenderness by inserting a knife into the apple mixture; it should slide in easily.
- Let the Apple Brown Betty cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to thicken slightly.
