Ingredients:

  • 6 large apples (approx. 1.3 kg), peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch wedges
  • 100g granulated white sugar
  • 15ml lemon juice
  • 8g cornstarch
  • 5g ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • 90g old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 125g all-purpose flour
  • 150g packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 115g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x9 inch square baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, and cinnamon until evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish and level the surface.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt.
  5. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry mixture. Use a pastry cutter or fingertips to work the butter in until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple layer without pressing it down.
  7. Bake on the center rack for 40–45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and fruit juices are bubbling vigorously.
  8. Allow the crisp to rest for 10–15 minutes before serving to let the sauce thicken.
