Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (approx. 1 kg / 2.2 lbs)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (20g)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1g)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed (28g)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (45g)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (100g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.5g)
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional) (25g)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C/ Gas Mark 5).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly. Dot with cubed butter.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped nuts, if using.
  5. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  7. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
