Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (approx. 1 kg / 2.2 lbs)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (20g)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5g)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1g)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15 ml)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed (28g)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (45g)
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (100g)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.5g)
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional) (25g)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C/ Gas Mark 5).
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly. Dot with cubed butter.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped nuts, if using.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
- Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
