Ingredients:

  • 7 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 3 cups granulated white sugar
  • 0.5 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 2.5 packets unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix (contrasting colors)
  • 0.5 tsp white food coloring (titanium dioxide)
  • Gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Strip the wax from the apples by dipping them in very hot water or scrubbing with a vinegar-water solution, then dry them completely. Insert thick bamboo skewers into the stem end.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and water. Stir once to combine before heating.
  3. Place a candy thermometer in the pot and heat over medium-high. Boil without stirring until the mixture reaches the 'hard crack' stage between 300°F and 310°F.
  4. Immediately remove the pan from heat. Let the syrup sit for 30 seconds until bubbles subside to ensure a smooth finish.
  5. Gently stir in the white food coloring to create an opaque base. Sprinkle the Kool-Aid packets and gel coloring over the surface, swirling lightly with a toothpick or the tip of a spoon to create a marble pattern.
  6. Tilt the pan and dip each apple, rotating quickly to coat all sides. Lift and allow excess syrup to drip off.
  7. Place apples on a greased silicone mat or parchment paper. Allow to cool and set at room temperature for at least 45 minutes before serving.
