Ingredients:

  • 1 package of phyllo dough (16 oz / 450 g), thawed
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (500 ml) milk
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons orange blossom water (or rose water, optional)
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, and cornstarch over medium heat. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Cook until the mixture thickens, stirring constantly.
  3. Remove from heat, whisk in eggs, vanilla, and orange blossom water. Set aside to cool.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the baking dish with melted butter.
  5. Lay down a sheet of phyllo and brush with butter. Repeat layering (about 8 sheets).
  6. Pour the cooled filling over the layered phyllo, spreading evenly.
  7. Layer more phyllo sheets (about 6-8), brushing each with butter.
  8. Cut into squares before baking. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Boil sugar, water, and lemon juice for 10 minutes. Cool slightly before drizzling over baked Warbat.
  10. Let cool, drizzle with syrup, and serve.
