Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vegetable oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (approx. 1 cup / 150g)
- 1.5 pounds (680g) ground beef (80/20 blend is ideal)
- 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) ketchup
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) salt (or to taste)
- 4 soft hamburger buns (steamed if possible)
- Optional toppings: Dill pickle slices, shredded cheddar cheese, yellow mustard
Instructions:
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until the beef is browned, draining off any excess grease.
- Stir in the beef broth, ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 20 minutes, or up to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more the flavors meld.
- While the beef simmers, steam the hamburger buns for a softer texture. You can use a steaming basket or simply wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave for a few seconds.
- Spoon the loose meat mixture generously onto the steamed hamburger buns.
- Top with your favourite toppings, such as dill pickle slices, shredded cheddar cheese, and extra yellow mustard.
