Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 pound shaved steak, thinly sliced (450g)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (5 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (2.5 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (1.25 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (2.5 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (1.25 ml)
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce (225g)
  • 1/4 cup beef broth (60 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup (30 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (15 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (5 ml)
  • 6 hamburger buns, split
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and bell peppers and sauté until softened and slightly caramelized.
  2. Add the shaved steak to the skillet with the vegetables. Cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned.
  3. In a small bowl, combine Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture over the steak and vegetables and stir to combine.
  4. Stir in the tomato sauce, beef broth, ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  5. While the sauce simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns for added texture and flavor.
  6. Spoon the steak and vegetable mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top with a slice of provolone cheese. Place the top halves of the buns over the cheese.
  7. You have two options here. You can use a kitchen torch, or place the sloppy joes in the oven to melt the cheese.
