Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups)
- 1 pound shaved steak, thinly sliced (450g)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (5 ml)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (2.5 ml)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (1.25 ml)
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (2.5 ml)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (1.25 ml)
- 8 ounces tomato sauce (225g)
- 1/4 cup beef broth (60 ml)
- 2 tablespoons ketchup (30 ml)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (15 ml)
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (5 ml)
- 6 hamburger buns, split
- 6 slices provolone cheese
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and bell peppers and sauté until softened and slightly caramelized.
- Add the shaved steak to the skillet with the vegetables. Cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned.
- In a small bowl, combine Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture over the steak and vegetables and stir to combine.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, beef broth, ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
- While the sauce simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns for added texture and flavor.
- Spoon the steak and vegetable mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top with a slice of provolone cheese. Place the top halves of the buns over the cheese.
- You have two options here. You can use a kitchen torch, or place the sloppy joes in the oven to melt the cheese.
