Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1¾ cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ cup toasted sunflower seeds (optional)
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, honey, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, and salt.
  3. Create a well in the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a rough dough forms.
  4. Transfer to a clean surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough gently. Shape into a round or place into a greased loaf pan.
  7. Cover again and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
