Ingredients:
- 1.5 lbs (680g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1/2 cup (50g) breadcrumbs, plain
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter, unsalted
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (475ml) beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until just combined.
- Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into an oval-shaped patty, about ¾ inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Add butter to the skillet and melt over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Bring to a simmer.
- Return the browned patties to the skillet with the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened. Internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).
- Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately. Enjoy your simple salisbury steak recipe!
