Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (454g) Ground Beef, 80/20
  • 1/2 medium Onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce / 425g) can Tomato Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) Tomato Paste
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) Brown Sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Yellow Mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) Chili Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) Salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) Black Pepper, or to taste
  • 4 Hamburger Buns, split
  • 1 tablespoon (14g) Butter (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the beef and onions. Stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  5. While the Sloppy Joe mix simmers, lightly butter the inside of the hamburger buns (if using). Toast in a dry skillet or under the broiler until golden brown.
  6. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom buns. Top with the other half of the bun and serve immediately.
