Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (475ml) whole milk (or plant-based alternative)
  • 2 ounces (55g) bittersweet chocolate (70% cacao or higher), chopped
  • 1 tablespoon (7g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (or to taste)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, marshmallows, cinnamon sticks for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In the saucepan, whisk together the milk, chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and salt.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and whisk constantly until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Be careful not to let it boil!
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2-3 minutes, whisking occasionally. This allows the flavours to meld together beautifully.
  4. Give it a taste! Add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink, or more cayenne pepper if you want more of a kick.
  5. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and garnish with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, marshmallows, or a cinnamon stick.
