Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 (28-ounce) can San Marzano crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped, plus more for garnish
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds to 1 minute), being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Pour in the San Marzano crushed tomatoes. Stir in oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and sugar.
- Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Simmer, uncovered, for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly and the flavours have melded.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Stir in fresh basil. Serve hot, garnished with additional basil.
