Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 900g / 2 pounds)
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) lemon juice
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons (25g) packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) all-purpose flour
- 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup (1 stick / 113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup (60g) chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss gently to coat evenly.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading in an even layer.
- In a separate bowl, combine the dry cake mix and cubed cold butter.
- Use a pastry blender or fork to cut the butter into the cake mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the chopped pecans or walnuts, if using.
- Evenly sprinkle the cake mix topping over the apple filling.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender. Check for doneness using a fork to assess apple softness.
- Let the apple crisp cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.
