Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 900g / 2 pounds)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) all-purpose flour
  • 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup (60g) chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss gently to coat evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading in an even layer.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the dry cake mix and cubed cold butter.
  5. Use a pastry blender or fork to cut the butter into the cake mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Stir in the chopped pecans or walnuts, if using.
  7. Evenly sprinkle the cake mix topping over the apple filling.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender. Check for doneness using a fork to assess apple softness.
  9. Let the apple crisp cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.
