Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 900g / 2 lbs)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (16g / 0.5 oz)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5 ml)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1.25 ml)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30 ml / 1 fl oz)
- 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) yellow cake mix (Duncan Hines or similar)
- 1/2 cup (1 stick / 113g / 4 oz) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional) (50g / 1.75 oz)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly.
- Pour the apple filling into the prepared baking dish.
- In the same bowl, combine the cake mix and cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry blender or your fingers to cut the butter into the cake mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts (if using).
- Sprinkle the cake mix crumble evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
