Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 900g / 2 lbs)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (16g / 0.5 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1.25 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (30 ml / 1 fl oz)
  • 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) yellow cake mix (Duncan Hines or similar)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 113g / 4 oz) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional) (50g / 1.75 oz)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly.
  2. Pour the apple filling into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In the same bowl, combine the cake mix and cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry blender or your fingers to cut the butter into the cake mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts (if using).
  4. Sprinkle the cake mix crumble evenly over the apple filling.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving.
