Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) flank or sirloin steak
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • Juice of 2 limes (about ¼ cup or 60ml)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 4 Cuban rolls or crusty baguette-style rolls
  • ½ cup (120ml) mayonnaise
  • Slices of fresh tomato
  • Slices of onion
  • Optional: Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine minced garlic, lime juice, olive oil, cumin, salt, black pepper, and oregano. Add the steak to the marinade, ensuring it is well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the grill or frying pan over medium-high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade and discard the excess marinade. Cook steak for 3-4 minutes per side or until it reaches your desired doneness (medium-rare is ideal).
  3. Remove steak from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing it thinly against the grain.
  4. Slice the Cuban rolls open. Spread mayonnaise on the insides of each roll. Layer with slices of steak, tomato, and onion. Garnish with fresh cilantro if using.
  5. Enjoy immediately, ideally with your favorite sides!
